The ‘Before Us, Beyond Us’ exhibit at the Old State House Museum in Little Rock is taking a deep dive into Arkansas’ history, featuring unique pieces from each era.
Early Years
Arkansas’ early years were defined by uncertainty and discovery, as it was first known as the Bear State, a pre-colonization frontier land occupied by Indigenous tribes.
The state was later known as the Toothpick State, a reference to the often dangerous and unruly Arkansas politics.
Arkansas Statehood
Arkansas officially joined the United States on June 15, 1836, becoming the 25th state to join the Union.
Soon, Arkansas’ plentiful natural resources began to propel the state’s economy forward, and it became the Wonder State.
Rise of Opportunity
Arkansas entered the modern era after the 1950s as the Land of Opportunity, as entrepreneurship and industry skyrocketed.
The state is now known as the Natural State, emphasizing its natural beauty and abundant outdoor recreation.
The ‘Before Us, Beyond Us’ exhibit is free and open to the public through Dec. 11.
