Australian officials are asking fans to respect the privacy of Neil, a 1-ton seal who has become a social media sensation. Neil, a 5-year-old elephant seal, has been making headlines with his antics, including picking fights with parked cars and smashing through barriers.
Concerns About Safety
Officials are concerned that Neil’s popularity could lead to ill-advised human-seal encounters that are dangerous for both sides. They are urging the public to refrain from identifying the town where Neil is currently located, in order to prevent a large crowd from gathering and potentially putting Neil and others at risk.
Neil’s behavior is not unusual for a juvenile male elephant seal, according to Sophia Volzke, an elephant seal scientist. Volzke says that juvenile male elephant seals need to practice for dominance battles, and with no other juveniles to practice with, Neil is rehearsing on objects like cars and traffic cones.
A Growing Problem
As Neil grows in size and popularity, officials are worried that his behavior will become more problematic. Neil could reach up to 5 meters in length and weigh triple his current weight if he survives to adulthood. However, about 90% of male elephant seals die before they reach breeding age, according to Volzke.
For now, Neil remains a beloved and troublesome presence in the town where he is currently located. While some residents are delighted by his antics, others are concerned about the damage he is causing and the potential risks to human safety.
