With over 4 million Florida residents expected to drive during the holiday weekend, state agencies are emphasizing safe driving and pedestrian awareness amid increased traffic.
Safe Driving Tips
Florida Highway Patrol officials are reminding drivers to follow speed limits to prevent serious incidents. "If you are traveling 100 mph or if you are going 50 mph over the posted speed limit, it’s an arrestable offense," said Miggy Garcia with Florida Highway Patrol. Additionally, pedestrians and drivers are being reminded to be mindful of each other, with Tim Freed of FDOT advising pedestrians to "make sure to make eye contact with those motorists, make sure they see you."
AAA suggests leaving early in the morning to avoid traffic, as Thursday and Sunday are expected to be the busiest travel days of the holiday. Matthew Richardson with FDOT advises drivers to inspect their vehicles before heading out, checking tires, fluids, and other essential systems to ensure a safe trip.
