New Nonprofit Aims to Help Workers Adapt to AI

A new bipartisan nonprofit, RAISE US, is working to help American workers adapt to the changing job market due to artificial intelligence. Founded by former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and former Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb, the group aims to pilot programs and incentives to help workers pivot to new careers in an economy that will increasingly be automated by artificial intelligence.

Addressing Job Losses

Critics warn of significant job losses due to AI, while backers say it will generate new wealth and create new job opportunities. RAISE US is starting with over $500 million to deploy on new forms of education and training, focusing on partnering with states and major employers.

The programs will first start in Arkansas, Maryland, Utah, and Connecticut, with the nonprofit initially partnering with officials in these states, as well as several of America’s largest companies and charitable organizations. The goal is to develop policies that connect schools more closely to employers, replacing layoffs with potential new jobs with higher incomes.

Expert Insights

AI experts have warned of gaps between the transformations that AI could create and the current social safety net. Neuroscientist Vivienne Ming agrees that the wealth generated by AI could create demand for more workers, but notes that the skills required in an AI economy go beyond traditional professions and involve curiosity and intellectual flexibility.

Raimondo emphasized the importance of taking action to ensure that America can realize the economic gains promised by AI without its workers suffering. The nonprofit aims to use states as a vehicle for testing ideas that Congress can later embrace as policies.
