House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) was corrected by a network host during a live CNBC interview on Thursday after citing inaccurate figures for the national average cost of gasoline.
Correcting the Record
Jeffries was speaking against President Donald Trump’s administration and the ongoing conflict with Iran when he stated that the national average gas price sat at $4.20. However, host Joe Kernen immediately interjected to correct the lawmaker, stating that the price was actually under $4.
A graphic displayed on-screen showed the national average at $3.93 as of June 24, according to AAA data. Jeffries argued that the numbers had shifted rapidly overnight, but Kernen pointed out that the current average was indeed lower than Jeffries’ claimed $4.20.
The correction came as fuel prices have been steadily declining, with the national average officially dropping below $4.00 on June 18 as peace talks began.
