16-year-old wounded in shooting on Shelbyville Road in Middletown

Louisville Metro Police are investigating a shooting that injured a 16-year-old boy in Middletown early Saturday morning. The incident occurred just after 12:30 a.m. in the 12700 block of Shelbyville Road, near Old Shelbyville Road.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the teenager with a gunshot wound to his leg. Emergency responders transported him to the University of Louisville Hospital, where doctors reported that his injuries are not life‑threatening.

LMPD has not identified any suspects at this time. The department’s Non‑Fatal Shooting Unit has taken charge of the investigation and is reviewing surveillance footage, witness statements, and any other evidence that may help determine what led to the shooting.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the department’s anonymous tip line at 502‑574‑LMPD (5673). Tips can be submitted without revealing the caller’s identity, and the department emphasizes that any detail, no matter how small, could be valuable.

Community response

Local residents expressed concern over the incident, noting that Middletown has generally been a quiet neighborhood. Parents and community leaders are urging the police to act swiftly and for local officials to consider additional safety measures, such as increased patrols and improved lighting in the area.

While the investigation is ongoing, the incident underscores the importance of parental involvement and community vigilance. Parents are reminded to talk with their children about the dangers of firearms and to ensure that any weapons in the home are stored securely, in accordance with constitutional rights and responsible stewardship.

Police resources and next steps

The LMPD Non‑Fatal Shooting Unit specializes in cases where victims survive gunshot wounds. Their role includes gathering forensic evidence, interviewing witnesses, and coordinating with other law‑enforcement agencies if needed. The unit will continue to work with the Louisville Metro Prosecutor’s Office to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed.

Authorities also encourage residents to report any suspicious activity they may have observed in the hours leading up to the shooting. The tip line remains open 24/7, and callers can remain anonymous.

Public safety context

Although Kentucky’s overall violent‑crime rate has been trending downward in recent years, incidents involving firearms continue to draw public attention. Community leaders often cite the need for balanced approaches that respect constitutional protections while promoting safety for families and children.

For now, the focus remains on the recovery of the injured teenager and on gathering the facts needed to bring those responsible to justice.
