Zach Lahn Wins Iowa GOP Governor Primary, Defeating Trump-Endorsed Feenstra

Zach Lahn, a farmer and businessman with an ‘Iowa First’ agenda, emerged victorious in the Iowa GOP gubernatorial primary, defeating Trump-endorsed Rep. Randy Feenstra. Lahn’s win marks a significant political shift as he prepares to face Democratic State Auditor Rob Sand in the upcoming general election.

Primary Upset

Lahn’s victory was unexpected, given Feenstra’s strong political backing and recognition as a sitting representative for Iowa’s 4th Congressional District. Feenstra had the support of prominent Iowa Republicans, including former Governor Terry Branstad, and a late endorsement from former President Donald Trump, who praised Feenstra as ‘MAGA all the way.’

Despite these advantages, Lahn, who ran as an outsider candidate, gained momentum through support from MAHA Action, a group aligned with the Make America Healthy Again movement. His campaign focused on local issues, resonating with voters who favored his ‘Iowa First’ message.

Looking Ahead to November

With the primary behind him, Lahn will now challenge Rob Sand, Iowa’s only Democratic statewide officeholder, in the November general election. Sand, who ran unopposed in the Democratic primary, has built his political profile on government accountability and anti-corruption efforts.

The general election is expected to be competitive. Early ratings from political analysts have varied, with The Cook Political Report moving the race from ‘Lean Republican’ to ‘Toss Up,’ while Inside Elections maintains a ‘Lean Republican’ rating.

If Sand wins, he would be the first Democrat to hold the governor’s office in Iowa since Chet Culver’s victory in 2006. Republicans have maintained control of the governor’s office since 2011, making this race a pivotal moment for both parties.
