Yukon’s Central Elementary is launching a new program with fewer tests, less screen time, and more outdoor learning. The Central Academy in Learning and Innovation, also known as CALI, will allow students to move at their own pace and focus on understanding the material rather than their age.
Program Details
The model, which originated in Finland, will have a different schedule and a more project-based, outcome-centered approach. Students will play outside every 45 minutes, and technology will only be used for research. More than 100 students have applied for this program, which is designed to bring back the joy of learning.
According to Laurie Gallagher, principal of Central Elementary, the program will give students the freedom to take initiative on their learning and think for themselves. Albany Cooper, a Yukon mother, has signed her two daughters up for the program and is excited about the focus on individualized learning and outdoor activities.
