YouTubers’ Films ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession’ Dominate Box Office

This past weekend, movie theaters across the country saw a surge in young audiences, not for a blockbuster franchise, but for films by young YouTube creators. ‘Backrooms’, a horror film by 20-year-old Kane Parsons, and ‘Obsession’, directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, have captivated Gen Z viewers.

Box Office Success

‘Backrooms’, released by A24 in over 3,400 locations in the U.S. and Canada, grossed an impressive $81.4 million in its opening weekend. This achievement is remarkable considering its modest $10 million production budget. The film’s success was nearly on par with the previous weekend’s earnings of ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’, a major ‘Star Wars’ installment.

Meanwhile, ‘Obsession’ has maintained strong box office performance, earning $26.4 million this weekend, marking a 10% increase from its opening. With a production cost of under $1 million, it has become Focus Features’ highest-grossing domestic release.

YouTube’s Influence on Cinema

The success of these films suggests that YouTube may not be the end of traditional cinema, but rather a new avenue for discovering fresh talent. Both films have drawn young, diverse audiences, with ‘Backrooms’ attracting 86% of viewers under 35, according to exit polls.

‘Backrooms’ originated as an internet urban legend, known as a creepypasta, before being developed into a viral web series. The film features stars like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve and has earned $118 million globally, making Parsons the youngest director to achieve a No. 1 film worldwide.

Impact on Major Franchises

Despite the success of these newcomers, major franchises like ‘Star Wars’ have seen a decline. ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ experienced a 69% drop from its opening weekend, highlighting a shift in audience preferences towards innovative storytelling from new creators.

This trend indicates a potential shift in the film industry, where young creators from digital platforms like YouTube are becoming significant players in cinema, drawing large crowds and reshaping the box office landscape.
