A youth pastor’s story has unraveled 20 years after his wife’s death in Utah. Richard and Laura Gudenkauf’s daughter, Bernadette, died in 2006 while hiking with her husband, David Vander Meer, in Zion National Park. David, a youth pastor, had been leading a youth group at a church in the Las Vegas area.
Investigation and Allegations
Initially, Bernadette’s death was ruled an accident. However, new allegations have surfaced, accusing David of pushing his wife to her death. The allegations came to light after a former member of David’s youth group tipped off law enforcement, stating that David had been using his position to groom underage members, including a girl with whom he had been sexually involved at the time of Bernadette’s death.
David had been receiving life insurance payouts after Bernadette’s death, totaling around $567,439. He used the money to live lavishly, buying cars and paying for trips for members of his youth group. Meanwhile, Bernadette’s mother, Laura, did not receive any of the insurance money.
The case has taken a new turn, with investigators re-examining the circumstances surrounding Bernadette’s death. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Utah is now investigating the allegations against David.
