The American Parents Coalition has issued a warning to parents about the YMCA’s transgender-inclusive camp and programming policies. The policies, which allow males into female cabins and restrooms, have raised concerns about safety and privacy.
Concerns Over Safety and Privacy
Executive director of the American Parents Coalition, Alleigh Marré, stated that the YMCA’s policies treat biological sex as irrelevant in spaces where it matters most for privacy and safety. Marré also noted that many YMCA branches limit or withhold gender-related disclosures, making it difficult for parents to make informed decisions about their children’s safety and privacy.
The American Parents Coalition has filed a Title IX complaint with the Departments of Health and Human Services, Education, and Housing and Urban Development, and has urged Congress to investigate the YMCA’s use of federal grants. Marré recommended that parents ensure they are informed of their local YMCA branches’ policies, including both facility and camp gender policies.
YMCA’s Response
When contacted for comment, YMCA media relations did not respond. The YMCA has previously removed national guidance related to access to cabins and bathrooms based on gender identity after the American Parents Coalition’s initial warning.
