Yen Hits Seven-Month High as Japan Signals More Rate Hikes, Markets React

Investors woke up to a stronger Japanese yen, which climbed as much as 1% to 152.89 per U.S. dollar – its highest level in seven months and the firmest since February. The rally follows a rare joint intervention by U.S. and Japanese authorities earlier this year after the yen fell to a four‑decade low.

Economic data fuels expectations of further BOJ tightening

Japan’s latest economic report showed the economy grew faster than initially estimated in the April‑June quarter, while real‑wage figures rose, reinforcing market expectations that the Bank of Japan will continue raising interest rates next week and into the following year. Traders see the yen’s strength as a direct response to the prospect of higher rates, which make the currency more attractive to investors.

Impact on Asian markets and U.S. futures

The yen’s advance weighed on a jittery equity market in the region. Japan’s Nikkei 225 edged up 0.3%, while MSCI’s broadest index of Asia‑Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.5%, led by a 2.3% jump in South Korean stocks, a key competitor in memory‑chip production. In the United States, S&P 500 e‑mini futures slipped 0.1%.

Broader market drivers

Chinese export growth accelerated in August, providing a boost to investor confidence, although import growth, while strong, fell short of forecasts. Meanwhile, copper prices continued their climb, extending a recent record high as concerns over supply shortages persisted.

European and Middle‑East updates

Early European trading saw pan‑region futures up 0.1%, German DAX futures also up 0.1%, and FTSE futures flat. In the Middle East, the Strait of Hormuz remains a point of uncertainty. President Donald Trump assured in June that the waterway would be open before the U.S. Labor Day holiday, but traffic through the strategic channel remains limited.

Iran escalated tensions on Tuesday, threatening the United States with “economic warfare” and claiming to have fired an advanced missile at U.S. warships. The rhetoric pushed Brent crude up 0.4% to $97.49 a barrel, marking the third consecutive day the price edged toward the $100 benchmark that has been elusive since May.

Company earnings and upcoming data

Investors will also be watching earnings reports from Casey’s General Stores and GameStop Corp later this week. On the economic calendar, Germany will release July export, import, and trade‑balance figures, while France will report its July current‑account and trade‑balance data.

Overall, the yen’s rally underscores the market’s sensitivity to central‑bank policy signals and highlights the interconnected nature of global finance, where a single currency move can ripple through equities, commodities, and geopolitical narratives.
