A 65-year-old grandfather, Carl McDaniel, was attacked by a bison at Yellowstone National Park on July 10. McDaniel suffered multiple bone fractures but is expected to recover. He was on a stroll with his grandson at Bridge Bay Campground when the bison charged.
Bison Behavior
Bison are known to be unpredictable and can accelerate quickly, reaching speeds of up to 35 mph. They are the largest land animals in North America, weighing up to 2,000 pounds and standing up to 6 feet tall.
According to Dr. Eric Lowe of Bozeman Health, McDaniel’s injuries were severe, but he is recovering. McDaniel said the hardest part of the experience was hitting the ground after being tossed by the bison.
