Step Into the Wild at Nashville Zoo at Grassmere

There is something genuinely wonderful about a place that can make a grown adult gasp at a giraffe and a five-year-old fall completely silent in awe of a clouded leopard — all within the same afternoon. Nashville Zoo at Grassmere, tucked into the lush 188-acre Grassmere estate in the Nolensville Pike corridor south of downtown, delivers exactly that kind of magic, and it does so with a personality that feels entirely Nashville: unpretentious, warmly welcoming, and quietly impressive.

The zoo sits on land that has been part of the city’s story since the 1800s. The historic Grassmere farmhouse still stands on the property, a beautiful reminder that this green corridor has long been a place where Nashvillians come to breathe. Today, more than 3,500 animals representing over 350 species call the grounds home, and the naturalistic habitats here feel genuinely thoughtful rather than afterthought enclosures. The Expedition Peru exhibit drops you into the world of giant anteaters and Andean bears, while Unseen New World invites you to watch golden lion tamarins thread through the canopy just above your head.

One of my absolute favorite stops is the Lorikeet Landing aviary, where you can hand-feed small cups of nectar to brilliantly colored lorikeets that land directly on your arms and shoulders without hesitation. It is the kind of spontaneous, close-up animal encounter that simply never gets old, no matter how many times you have done it. Children shriek with delight. Adults do too — they just try to look more composed about it.

The zoo also houses one of the largest wooden jungle gym structures in the United States: the Wild Animal Carousel and the sprawling Jungle Gym play area are perennial hits with younger visitors. But do not let the family-friendly reputation fool you into thinking this is a place only for kids. The conservation programming here is serious and substantive. Nashville Zoo actively participates in Species Survival Plans for critically endangered animals and has earned a strong reputation in the national zoo community for its work in amphibian conservation.

Spend a morning wandering the Bamboo Trail, where red pandas doze in the branches overhead like the world’s most adorable stuffed animals come to life. Then grab lunch at one of the on-site dining spots and settle in for an afternoon with the flamingos, meerkats, and the always-entertaining Kangaroo Kickabout, where you can actually walk through an open habitat alongside wallabies and kangaroos.

Parking is easy, the staff is genuinely knowledgeable and friendly, and the grounds are well-kept across every season. Nashville Zoo at Grassmere is open year-round, and a membership pays for itself surprisingly fast if you plan to return — which, trust me, you will want to.

Whether you are a lifelong Nashvillian looking for a fresh afternoon out or a visitor wanting something beyond the Broadway honky-tonk circuit, the zoo is exactly the kind of place that reminds you why cities that invest in spaces like this are cities worth returning to.
