Elon Musk’s xAI has filed a lawsuit against a user who allegedly created child sexual abuse materials using the Grok chatbot. The lawsuit claims that the user, Terry Wayne Harwood, violated xAI’s terms of service by using the chatbot to create explicit images of minors and adults without their consent.
Alleged Misuse of Grok Chatbot
According to the lawsuit, Harwood created multiple xAI accounts and entered misleading prompts to circumvent built-in safeguards and create explicit deepfakes of minors and adults. The lawsuit alleges that Harwood’s actions exposed xAI to significant legal risk and reputational damage.
xAI has faced scrutiny over its chatbot before, including a series of violent and antisemitic posts from Grok last year. The company has taken steps to address these issues, including suspending accounts and reporting suspicious activity to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
The lawsuit seeks a declaration that Harwood broke the site’s Terms of Service and unspecified damages. xAI has suspended 52,222 accounts and made 73,604 reports to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in 2026, resulting in at least 244 arrests.
