As the election season is in full swing, Wyoming voters are seeking answers from candidates on how to address the state’s skyrocketing healthcare costs. With a 421% increase in average monthly premiums for a 60-year-old earning $63,000 per year, Wyoming has become the state with the worst healthcare costs in the country.
Freedom Caucus Candidates
Some candidates have been labeled as members of the Freedom Caucus, a group that has been demonized by traditional Republicans. However, these candidates may hold the key to addressing Wyoming’s healthcare crisis. They are calling for a return to conservative values and a reduction in government spending.
A small business owner in Casper, who wishes to remain anonymous, expressed frustration with the current state of healthcare in Wyoming. ‘I own a small retail business in Casper, and my household’s premiums, for two reasonably healthy people in our early 50s, run over $45,000 a year. It’s painful when the bill lands in the mailbox alongside the slick campaign mailers, but in my case, it gets paid, and I consider myself fortunate to be able to.’
However, not all Wyoming residents are as fortunate. Many are skipping coverage or going without care due to the high costs. Candidates have been criticized for not providing concrete solutions to the healthcare crisis. ‘I haven’t heard one candidate, from either party, offer a real answer. Not Medicaid expansion, not a reinsurance pool, not anything beyond pointing fingers at past or present administrations,’ said Donovan Short, a concerned citizen.
A Call to Action
Voters are demanding that candidates provide real solutions to the healthcare crisis. ‘We need to know who the Freedom Caucus candidates are, look unbiasedly at their positions, and vote accordingly. We should vote for government versus citizen rights and be confident in that vote,’ said Chris Willis, a concerned citizen.
