Wyoming GOP Endorses Primary Candidates

The Wyoming Republican Party has endorsed candidates in six statewide and federal races, less than a month before the August 18 primary. This move has sparked debate over pre-primary endorsements, with some arguing it could influence the outcome of the election.

Endorsements and Lawsuits

The party endorsed U.S. Rep. Harriet Hageman for U.S. Senate, Secretary of State Chuck Gray for U.S. House, Brent Bien for governor, Rep. Rachel Williams for secretary of state, Rep. Scott Smith for treasurer, and Rep. Tom Kelly for superintendent of public instruction. The endorsements came after the party rewrote its bylaws in April to allow pre-primary endorsements.

The party is also suing the state over a law that limits what it can spend backing its endorsed candidates. The law makes it a misdemeanor for a party to spend money “in the aid of the nomination of any one person as against another person of the same political party running in the primary election.” The party argues that this law violates its First Amendment rights.

Reaction from Candidates and Lawmakers

Reaction to the endorsements has been split, with some candidates welcoming the support and others criticizing the process. Sen. Charles Scott, R-Casper, argued that the party should remain neutral before the primary, while Sen. Eric Barlow said contested primaries should be decided by voters.

U.S. House candidate Kevin Christensen, who was not endorsed, criticized the process as opaque and argued that it carries an appearance of “pay to play.” Christensen, a 27-year Army combat veteran, said his service required stretches of political neutrality.

Wyoming GOP Chairman Bryan Miller said the endorsements are just information, not instruction, and that the party is providing an analysis of the candidates. Miller also pointed to the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in National Republican Senatorial Committee v. FEC, which struck down federal limits on how much a party can spend in coordination with its candidates.
