Wyoming Celebrates 136 Years of Statehood

Wyoming celebrated its 136th birthday on July 10, marking the day it officially became a state in 1890. The state has a rich history, from its early days as a territory to its current status as a thriving state with a strong sense of community.

History of Wyoming Statehood

Wyoming’s journey to statehood began in 1868, when President Andrew Johnson signed the Organic Act, making it a territory. Over the next 20 years, the territory worked towards political and economic success, with a formal petition for admission to the Union being sent to Congress in 1888.

The state’s constitution was drafted in 1889 and approved by voters in November of that year. On July 10, 1890, President Benjamin Harrison signed the bill, making Wyoming the 44th state in the United States.

Residents Share Their Favorite Things About Wyoming

To celebrate Wyoming’s birthday, residents were asked to share their favorite things about the state. Responses included the state’s natural beauty, its people, and its rich history. One resident, Paula Qualls, shared her family’s connection to the state, including her great-grandmother’s role in giving the statehood speech.

Others praised the state’s vast public lands, its outdoor recreational opportunities, and its strong sense of community. Reader Autum Greenleaf shared her version of The Code of the West, which emphasizes the importance of being tough but fair, taking pride in one’s work, and keeping promises.

The Kelly Walsh High School Class of 1996 said its favorite part of Wyoming is its people, while reader Katie Farley shared her family’s history in the state, dating back to 1895.

Sheryl Yates praised the state’s original culture, saying it is not about hate or party affiliation, but about living and letting live, helping and respecting one’s neighbors. Sandra Boone Dugan said she moved to Wyoming because of its people and freedoms.

Echo Fisher Renner listed the state’s mountains, open spaces, people, agriculture, and natural resources as her favorite things about Wyoming. Marilyn Pool simply called the state ‘home, sweet home.’
