Wylie ISD pushes Week 1 high school football kickoffs back 30 minutes due to extreme heat

With daytime temperatures continuing to exceed 100 °F across the Dallas metro, Wylie Independent School District announced Monday night that it is delaying the start times for Week 1 high school football games. The change applies to both varsity squads, moving kickoff from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to help protect student‑athletes from heat‑related risks.

Variety of games affected

The Wylie Pirates will travel to Richardson’s Eagle‑Mustang Stadium for a varsity showdown against JJ Pearce. Meanwhile, the Wylie Raiders will host Richardson at Wylie ISD Stadium in a battle of defending district champions.

Junior varsity action also sees adjustments. Wylie will host JJ Pearce at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, while the Wylie East Blue junior varsity team will play at Richardson at the same time.

Freshman schedules

Freshman teams have been slotted to start earlier in the evening. The Wylie Pirates’ White freshman team will play at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, and the Maroon freshman team will take the field at 7:30 p.m., both games at JJ Pearce. Wylie East’s White freshman squad will open at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against Allen at the Lowery Freshman Center, and the Blue freshman team will host Richardson at 5:30 p.m. at Wylie East High School.

Community response

Parents and coaches welcomed the schedule shift, noting that the later start times give players additional time to cool down after practice and reduce the likelihood of heat exhaustion during the first half of the season. The district’s decision aligns with guidance from health officials who recommend limiting strenuous activity during extreme heat.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early to secure parking and to bring water and sun protection for the evening games. The district reminded spectators that the stadiums will remain open for the full duration of each contest.

Looking ahead

Wylie ISD will continue to monitor weather conditions and may adjust future game times if temperatures remain dangerously high. The district plans to issue updates through its website and social‑media channels.
