Mystic Aquarium releases rehabilitated harbor seal back to Rhode Island waters

Residents of Connecticut and neighboring Rhode Island celebrated a heart‑warming wildlife rescue when Mystic Aquarium released a young harbor seal back into its natural habitat. The seal, affectionately named Peanut, was found weakened on the New Hampshire shoreline on July 5 by staff from the aquarium’s partner, Seacoast Science Center.

Rescue and assessment

Seacoast Science Center personnel observed that Peanut was thin, lethargic, and showed signs of infection around her mouth. Recognizing the urgency, the team rescued the animal that same day and transported her to Mystic Aquarium the following morning for professional care.

Rehabilitation process

At Mystic Aquarium, Peanut entered an individualized rehabilitation plan. Veterinarians treated her respiratory infection and other injuries while providing nutrition through a specialized formula. Over the ensuing weeks, she transitioned to a diet of fresh fish and eventually began feeding independently.

According to Sarah Callan, Animal Rescue Program Manager at Mystic Aquarium, Peanut gained more than 20 pounds during her stay. “Peanut’s recovery is a great example of what can happen when a stranded animal receives timely intervention and specialized rehabilitation care,” Callan said. “Our team is thrilled to see her return to the ocean today, and we’re grateful to our partners at Seacoast Science Center for getting her the help she needed.”

Return to the wild

On the morning of August 26, staff released Peanut off the coast of Rhode Island, where she is expected to rejoin the local harbor seal population. The successful release underscores the importance of regional cooperation among marine‑science organizations and the dedication of volunteers who monitor and protect coastal wildlife.

Mystic Aquarium’s animal rescue program, which collaborates with partners such as Seacoast Science Center, continues to respond to stranded marine mammals along the New England shoreline. The program provides emergency medical care, rehabilitation, and, when appropriate, release back to the ocean.

Community impact

Stories like Peanut’s resonate with families and faith‑based groups who value stewardship of God’s creation. Local schools often use the aquarium’s rescue efforts as educational tools, teaching children about marine ecosystems, the responsibility of caring for vulnerable creatures, and the role of compassionate service.
