In a heartwarming ceremony at Lawrenceburg High School in Indiana, 100-year-old World War II veteran George Klopp was awarded his high school diploma, a recognition long overdue. More than 3,000 attendees gave Klopp a standing ovation as he accepted the diploma he missed out on when he left to serve his country in 1944.

A Lifetime of Service

Klopp joined the Navy at the age of 18, following in the footsteps of his brothers. His service took him to the South Pacific, where he protected a Navy base hospital on Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides. After the war, he continued his service at an American Samoa base and later at Pearl Harbor as an electrician’s mate.

Reflecting on his return to the United States, Klopp recalled the moment he realized he was home when he saw the Golden Gate Bridge. His service was recognized with several awards and medals, and he dedicated 50 years to the American Legion Color Guard. At 96, he joined the Honor Guard, providing military funerals.

A Community’s Tribute

Lawrenceburg High School principal Jared Leiker expressed the school’s honor in correcting the oversight of Klopp’s missing diploma, celebrating his century of character, sacrifice, and service. Klopp’s story is a testament to the values of dedication and community service, resonating deeply with the audience.
