Russian Orthodox Cleric in Czech Republic Denies Link to Substance Found in Car

Metropolitan Hilarion, a former senior cleric of the Russian Orthodox Church, has denied any connection to small containers of a white substance found in his car by Czech police. The incident occurred during a search in the Czech Republic, which Hilarion claims was conducted improperly. He has called for an independent investigation into the matter.

Details of the Incident

Hilarion, whose secular name is Grigory Alfeyev, served as the head of the church’s external relations from 2009 to 2022. He reported that the police did not inform him of the reason for stopping his vehicle and did not allow him to witness the search. A post on his Telegram page stated that he ‘categorically denies any involvement in the illegal possession of prohibited substances and considers what happened to be a provocation.’

The cleric also mentioned that this incident follows a period of pressure on him and the Orthodox community he serves in the Czech town of Karlovy Vary. This pressure reportedly included anonymous and sometimes violent threats.

Police Response

A spokeswoman for the Czech police’s National Drug Headquarters confirmed that a search was conducted following an anonymous tip. However, she did not comment on whether a substance had been found or on the identities of those involved, citing ongoing criminal proceedings.

The situation has raised concerns within the Orthodox community in Karlovy Vary, highlighting the tensions faced by religious communities in the region. The call for an independent investigation reflects a desire for transparency and fairness in addressing these allegations.
