Wrong-Way Crash Suspect in ICE Custody After Incident with State Police

Lucas Gustavo Brajak DeAlmeida DiBenedetto, a 41-year-old resident of Newburyport, Massachusetts, is currently in the custody of federal immigration officials following a wrong-way crash involving a Massachusetts State Police cruiser on Route 1. The incident occurred early Sunday morning, resulting in injuries to both DiBenedetto and the trooper involved.

Incident Details

According to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, DiBenedetto was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Peabody District Court on Tuesday morning, prior to his scheduled arraignment. He faces charges of operating under the influence of liquor and negligent driving. Despite his absence in court, Judge Frances Dallmeyer issued a default warrant for his return but did not revoke his bail.

The crash took place after a state trooper observed DiBenedetto’s vehicle traveling south in the northbound lane of Route 1. The trooper, along with fellow officers, coordinated efforts to prevent further vehicles from entering the roadway, aiming to protect public safety. Despite these efforts, DiBenedetto’s vehicle collided with a marked police cruiser. Both DiBenedetto and the trooper were treated for their injuries and subsequently released from the hospital.

Legal Proceedings

DiBenedetto had been released on $500 cash bail after appearing before a bail magistrate following the crash. However, his failure to appear in court for the arraignment led to his detention by ICE. The reasons for his custody by immigration officials remain unclear, as federal authorities have yet to comment.

At the scene of the crash, DiBenedetto reportedly admitted to consuming two beers at a local bar/restaurant in Peabody. Officers noted signs of alcohol consumption, including the smell of alcohol, slurred speech, and glassy eyes, which contributed to his arrest.

Context and Community Impact

This incident follows a tragic event earlier in the month, where Trooper Kevin Trainor was killed in a similar wrong-way crash on Route 1. Trainor was recognized for his heroism in protecting others on the road. The recent crash involving DiBenedetto has reignited concerns about road safety and the dangers posed by impaired driving.

The State Police Association of Massachusetts commended the trooper involved in Sunday’s crash for his bravery and dedication to public safety, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by law enforcement officers in such situations.
