The European climate service Copernicus announced Monday that the world’s oceans recorded their hottest surface temperature on record over the weekend, reaching 21.1 °C (70 °F). The unprecedented warmth is linked to a strong El Niño event and ongoing human‑caused climate change.
Scientists warn of cascading impacts
Copernicus strategic climate lead Samantha Burgess said the heat “puts the ocean under immense pressure” and signals a strained climate system. Former NOAA chief Jane Lubchenco called the record “very troubling,” noting that warmer oceans destabilize weather patterns, threaten food security, and endanger marine ecosystems.
Warmer water becomes more acidic and holds less oxygen, which can damage fisheries and other sea‑based industries. It also alters ocean currents, feeding stronger, rainier storms and larger storm surges. Burgess explained that a warm ocean reduces the cooling effect of sea breezes, amplifying heat waves, especially in regions like Europe that have already experienced unusually warm summers.
El Niño and long‑term warming
Typically, sea‑surface temperatures peak in March‑April in the Southern Hemisphere, but this year the record was set in August, indicating an early and abnormal shift. The current El Niño, a natural Pacific warming that influences global weather, is still growing and is expected to peak between November and January. Scientists say it is already as large as recent events and could reach unprecedented levels.
In addition to the El Niño contribution, long‑term warming from the burning of coal, oil and gas has raised ocean temperatures by about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F) over recent decades.
Potential effects on marine life and fisheries
Biology professor Boris Worm of Dalhousie University warned that the early, extreme heat could lead to unprecedented impacts on marine ecosystems. Marine ecologist John Bruno noted that coral cover is now roughly one‑fifth of 1990 levels, though some fast‑growing coral species are showing limited adaptation.
Both scientists highlighted the risk of fisheries collapse, especially the Peruvian anchovy fishery, which historically suffers during El Niño events. Anchovies cannot migrate to cooler waters, leading to reduced reproduction and potential starvation for predators, including larger fish, marine mammals, seabirds and human communities that rely on them.
Warmer waters also favor opportunistic species such as jellyfish, which have already been observed more frequently off Europe and could become more common along the U.S. East Coast.

Former NOAA administrator Rick Spinrad described the ocean as the planet’s thermostat, emphasizing that a healthy ocean is essential for safety, prosperity and wellbeing.
