Omar Artan, a renowned Somali referee, was denied entry to the United States for the World Cup despite being issued a visa. Artan, who was named Africa’s best male referee in 2025, was turned away at Miami International Airport due to vetting concerns, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Payment Despite Denial
Despite being denied entry, Artan will still receive his full tournament fee from FIFA. The fee will be determined after the tournament concludes next month. Artan had been scheduled to meet up with other World Cup referees at their training base in Miami.
FIFA stated that it was not involved in the immigration processes and that the host government ultimately determines who is granted entry. As a result, Artan will not be able to train and officiate at the World Cup. However, he has been appointed to officiate one of European soccer’s showcase games, the UEFA Super Cup in August.
