Workhouse Arts Center Opens “Transformations” Exhibit Highlighting Lorton’s Redemption Story

Fairfax County – The historic Lorton complex, once the primary correctional facility for the District of Columbia, has been reborn as the Workhouse Arts Center. The center’s newest exhibition, “Transformations: Documenting the Substance Abuse Program at Lorton Reformatory, 1989‑1991,” opens now and runs through November 7, offering a powerful visual record of second chances.

From Prison Walls to Gallery Walls

Photographer Lloyd Wolf spent three years (1989‑1991) photographing the Pilot Substance Abuse Program, a pioneering effort that placed men in treatment, education and vocational training while they served their sentences. Working alongside journalist John Cohen of The City Paper, Wolf captured the daily struggles and triumphs of participants as they moved from intake to graduation and, ultimately, release.

“Lorton was the main prison for the District for many, many, many years,” Wolf said. “The program really helped these men. They had a very low rate of recidivism. I watched them grow, I watched them change the kind of outlook and attitudes they had.”

Curator’s Vision

Workhouse Arts Center curator Sarah Berry explained that the exhibit is meant to bridge the site’s past and present. “As a curator, I want to make sure that I’m able to bridge the story of what this site was and the story of what this site is,” she told WTOP.

Berry praised Wolf’s technical skill and compassion. “What I learned in working with these images was what a heart he has,” she said, noting that the photographs convey both the hardship of incarceration and the hope that followed.

Highlights From the Collection

The centerpiece is a portrait of Lonnie Blue Bey, captured with a pencil tucked behind his ear, a detail Wolf says “really showed his thoughtfulness.” Another striking image features Esau Prentiss, a bearded man whose “angelic look” hinted at the future; after release he became a storyteller in D.C. schools.

One of the most moving photos shows a woman proposing to a man she visited in the prison. “She is in the act of proposing to him in that picture. He said yes. So that has great meaning to me,” Wolf explained.

Why the Exhibit Matters

Beyond its artistic merit, the exhibit underscores the value of rehabilitation programs that prioritize personal growth over punishment. The low recidivism rate reported by the Pilot program aligns with the broader community goal of fostering safe, thriving neighborhoods through redemption and support.

Visitors are encouraged to reflect on the images and consider how compassion and opportunity can transform lives. “My goal in any of the photos I take, but especially in those on display at the Workhouse Arts Center, is that it generates a reaction, and then maybe reflect,” Wolf said.

Plan Your Visit

The “Transformations” exhibit is open to the public at the Workhouse Arts Center in Fairfax County through November 7. Admission is free, and the center offers guided tours on weekends. For more information, visit workhousearts.org or call the center’s visitor line.
