A 24-year-old woman was shot in the lower leg during a fight in a private parking lot in central Salem on July 4. The incident occurred in the 1400 block of Southeast Mill Street, according to the Salem Police Department.
A group of about 20 people, mostly in their 20s, were lighting fireworks in the parking lot when a groundskeeper asked them to leave, as it was private property. The group allegedly assaulted the 54-year-old groundskeeper, who then discharged a firearm, hitting the woman.
The woman was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The groundskeeper’s identity has not been released, and no criminal charges have been filed yet. The incident is being investigated by the police department’s Violent Crimes Unit.
The Willamette Heritage Center, a Willamette University building, and Bush Elementary School are all located near the area where the shooting occurred. However, spokespeople for Willamette and the Salem-Keizer School District confirmed that the shooting did not happen on either university or school property.
