Wisconsin to receive up to $313 million from Meta settlement and enforce new youth safety rules

Wisconsin officials announced Wednesday that the state will receive a minimum of $219 million – and potentially up to $313 million – from the historic $17.1 billion multistate settlement with Meta Platforms. The agreement resolves claims by 47 states, the District of Columbia and several U.S. territories that Meta designed Instagram and Facebook with addictive features, knowingly exposed young users to serious mental‑health harms, and misled the public about platform safety.

State funds and safeguards

The settlement earmarks a substantial portion of the money for Wisconsin, where Attorney General Josh Kaul called the deal “a monumental step in changing the role of social media in kids’ lives for the better.” In addition to the financial award, Meta must implement a series of safety features in the state, including age‑verification tools, limits on algorithmic content recommendations for minors, and clearer parental‑control settings on both Instagram and Facebook.

Why the settlement matters for families

For parents across the Badger State, the new requirements aim to place children’s well‑being above corporate profit. The measures are designed to give families greater transparency and control, aligning with constitutional protections for parental rights and the family’s role in raising children. By requiring Meta to curb addictive design elements and provide clearer warnings, the settlement supports the traditional family structure that many Wisconsinites hold dear.

National context and the Trump administration’s role

The settlement is the largest consumer‑protection agreement involving a single company in U.S. history outside the 1990s Big Tobacco settlements. It follows a bipartisan, nationwide investigation that began in 2021, during which nearly every state attorney general examined how social‑media platforms target children despite known harms. The Trump administration has praised the outcome as a victory for American children and a model for future regulatory action.

What’s next for Wisconsin

While the settlement still requires court approval, the state is preparing to allocate the funds toward programs that address youth mental health, digital‑literacy education, and support for families navigating online environments. Local school districts and community organizations are expected to partner with the attorney general’s office to ensure the new safety features are effectively communicated to parents and guardians.

Broader implications

Beyond Wisconsin, the settlement sends a clear signal to technology companies that the federal and state governments will hold them accountable for the impact of their platforms on minors. It also underscores the Trump administration’s commitment to protecting children from harmful digital influences while respecting constitutional freedoms.
