Wisconsin National Guard Soldiers Return Home After Middle East Deployment

In a heartwarming scene at the Appleton Flight Center in Greenville, Wisconsin, over 200 soldiers from the Wisconsin National Guard’s 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment were joyfully reunited with their families. The soldiers returned home after a challenging yearlong deployment in the Middle East, where they served in the U.S. Central Command area, including Kuwait and Iraq.

Emotional Reunions

The welcome home ceremonies were filled with smiles, hugs, and a few tears as families embraced their loved ones. Soldier Grant Voegeli from Janesville expressed his relief and happiness at being back, saying, “I missed my family a lot. We were gone much longer than I had anticipated.” The deployment, which lasted about a month longer than expected, tested the resilience of both the soldiers and their families.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers praised the soldiers for their professionalism and dedication, stating, “In May of last year, you answered the call when our nation needed you, and today, we’re grateful for your service and proud to welcome you home.” The soldiers’ mission involved working with NATO partners to promote regional security and stability, a task they performed under challenging conditions.

Service and Sacrifice

Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Matt Strub of the Wisconsin National Guard commended the soldiers for their exceptional performance under pressure. “You operated under an incredibly hostile environment and incredible pressure, often in dangerous and unpredictable conditions,” he said. Their deployment included involvement in the Strait of Hormuz and Operation Epic Fury, where they adapted to new mission requirements.

For the families, the soldiers’ return marked the end of a difficult year. Laura Sandahl, whose husband was among those returning, shared the challenges of managing three young children alone. “The last year has been very difficult,” she said, emphasizing the day-to-day perseverance required during the deployment.

As the soldiers settle back into civilian life, they look forward to simple pleasures. Voegeli expressed his excitement about returning to familiar comforts, saying, “We’re going to go home today, get some Culver’s, so that’s what I’m looking forward to the most. I missed Kwik Trip. Honestly, everything about Wisconsin. I’m grateful to be back.”
