A top ally of former President Barack Obama, David Axelrod, believes that other progressives might have a better chance of getting elected if Francesca Hong, a self-proclaimed socialist, loses her bid to become the Democratic nominee in Wisconsin.

Hong, a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, has advocated for policies such as universal childcare, a $20 minimum wage, and the abolishment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She has also called for publicly run grocery stores and opposes continued U.S. support for Israel.
Axelrod’s comments suggest that not all progressives are viewed equally across the party, with some being seen as political liabilities. Hong has attracted attention for her cultural and social issues, including past calls to cancel Thanksgiving and defund the police.
The primary election is set to take place next Tuesday, with Hong facing off against Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. The winner will go on to the state’s general election on November 3.
