Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers is urging Congress to support the reauthorization of the federal Farm Bill, citing its importance to the state’s agricultural economy. In a letter to the state’s Congressional delegation, Evers emphasized the need for a comprehensive Farm Bill that protects Wisconsin’s farmers, strengthens the state’s food systems, and invests in the future of rural communities.

Farm Bill Importance

The Farm Bill is more than just agricultural policy; it is economic policy, nutrition policy, conservation policy, and rural development policy. Its impacts are felt in every corner of the state, and Evers is urging Congress to work across the aisle to advance a comprehensive bill.

Evers also highlighted the importance of Wisconsin’s FoodShare program, which provides basic food necessities to nearly 700,000 Wisconsinites, including seniors, veterans, and approximately 270,000 Wisconsin kids. However, new requirements for the program enacted through President Trump and Republicans’ so-called ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ are imposing significant new administrative burdens on states, creating unnecessary complexity in administering the program and increasing the risk of benefit disruptions for eligible households.

Hemp Law Revision

In addition to supporting the Farm Bill, Evers is also urging Congress to revise the new restrictive federal hemp law passed by Congress at the end of last year. The new federal definition sets the legal limit of THC in final hemp-derived cannabinoid products at 0.4 milligrams per container, which could jeopardize $700 million in economic impact and nearly 3,500 jobs in Wisconsin.
