Wingfield Springs family shares backyard video of bobcat family

Residents of Wingfield Springs, Nevada, recently captured a rare glimpse of local wildlife in their own backyard. The Bakker family recorded a short video that shows a pair of adult bobcats—commonly called a mother and a father—along with several bobcat kittens moving through the yard. The family sent the footage to 2 News Nevada on Monday, prompting the station to share the clip with the broader community.

Wildlife displaced by recent fires

Local officials and wildlife experts note that the sighting is part of a larger pattern. Recent wildfires across Nevada have destroyed large swaths of natural habitat, forcing animals such as bobcats, coyotes, and deer to seek shelter and food in suburban neighborhoods and along roadways. When their traditional ranges are compromised, these animals often wander into backyards, parks, and even city streets.

Bobcats are solitary hunters by nature, but during the breeding season a male and female will share a den and raise a litter of kittens together. The Bakker family’s video appears to capture this family unit during that vulnerable period. The kittens, still covered in soft fur, can be seen following their parents as they explore the yard.

Safety recommendations for residents

Authorities advise residents who encounter bobcats or other wildlife to keep a safe distance. Giving the animals plenty of space allows them to move through the area on their own without feeling threatened. It is also recommended that pets be kept indoors or closely supervised to prevent any accidental encounters that could endanger both the animals and the pets.

“We love seeing wildlife, but it’s important to remember that these are still wild animals,” said a local wildlife officer who reviewed the video. “Observing from a distance helps protect the animals and keeps our neighborhoods safe.”

What to do if you see bobcats

If you spot bobcats in your yard, the following steps are suggested:

  • Stay inside and observe from a window or a safe distance.
  • Do not attempt to feed or approach the animals.
  • Secure any small pets, chickens, or livestock.
  • Contact local animal control or the Nevada Department of Wildlife if the animals appear injured or are causing a safety concern.

The Bakker family’s video serves as a reminder that human and animal communities are increasingly sharing the same spaces, especially during times of environmental stress. By respecting wildlife and following safety guidelines, residents can help ensure that both people and animals coexist peacefully.
