Santa Barbara High quarterback Griffin Arnold returns cancer‑free for 2026 season

Santa Barbara, Calif. – The Santa Barbara High School Dons are set to start their 2026 football season with a story of resilience and faith. Quarterback Griffin Arnold, who was named the Big Game MVP last season, has been declared cancer‑free following treatment for non‑Hodgkin lymphoma.

Arnold’s sophomore year in 2025 was marked by an impressive performance: 14 touchdown passes and only one interception in six games, culminating in a Most Valuable Player honor in the Dons’ victory over rival San Marcos. In early October, however, he experienced stomach pains, fatigue and fever. Tests at UCLA Children’s Hospital revealed a papaya‑sized tumor blocking his intestines, confirming a diagnosis of non‑Hodgkin lymphoma.

Following a rigorous chemotherapy regimen, Arnold’s body responded well. By the spring, he was back playing baseball for the Dons, and his weight, which had dropped about 40 pounds during treatment, has since returned.

“Going through all of that definitely changed my outlook on a lot of stuff,” Arnold said. “It’s all a blur now—I am back in full shape and grateful to be out here with the guys. You don’t take anything for granted anymore.”

Head coach Nate Mendoza praised Arnold’s return, noting both his on‑field talent and his leadership. “We love his play, but having his leadership back is key. He is a phenomenal leader,” Mendoza said.

The Dons open the season this Friday night at home against Camarillo, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Arnold expressed confidence in the team’s prospects, citing a strong roster of returning defensive players and a solid offensive lineup. “I am feeling better mentally and physically, you know I am stronger,” he said. “We have the guys, we have the weapons, and we have a lot of returners on defense, so I think everyone is looking forward to a great season.”

Community support and faith

The local community has rallied around Arnold, offering prayers and encouragement. Many families and church groups have visited the hospital and sent messages of support, underscoring the town’s commitment to its youth and the importance of faith during trials.

Arnold’s story has also highlighted the role of parental involvement and the value of early medical intervention. His parents worked closely with medical professionals, ensuring he received timely treatment and continued academic support during his recovery.

As the Dons prepare for the upcoming season, Arnold’s journey serves as a testament to perseverance, the power of community, and the hope that comes from overcoming adversity. The team and its supporters look forward to a competitive season, confident that their quarterback’s renewed health will be a driving force on the field.
