In a significant decision for the local educational community, the Evergreen Public School Board of Directors has appointed Willie Williams III as the new Director for District 4. This appointment was finalized with a unanimous 4-0 vote during the board meeting held on Tuesday. Williams was selected from a competitive pool of five finalists, all of whom were considered for the position.
Williams, who is not only a seasoned educator but also a parent of children attending various levels of Evergreen Public Schools, brings more than a decade of experience in teaching, administration, and community leadership. His current role as the director of the Grice-Adair Center for Educational Excellence in Portland Public Schools highlights his commitment to educational excellence and community involvement.
In his application, Williams expressed a strong dedication to elevating student voices, strengthening educational systems, and ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality, inclusive education. His appointment fills a vacancy left by Jacqueline Weatherspoon, who resigned on March 2 after serving on the board since her appointment in March 2022 and subsequent election in 2023.
The process to fill the District 4 seat was thorough, involving the receipt of 17 letters of interest and nine formal applications. The board conducted public interviews with the five finalists on May 19, demonstrating a transparent and community-focused approach to the selection process.
Williams is set to be sworn in at the upcoming board meeting on June 9. He will serve the remainder of the term until the end of 2027, with the position set to be filled by voters in the general election on November 2, 2027.
