Let’s Go Washington Sets Record in Income Tax Repeal Effort

In a remarkable show of public support, Let’s Go Washington (LGW) has gathered over 92,000 signatures in the first week of their campaign to repeal the newly enacted income tax in Washington state. This initiative, known as IP26-645, aims to overturn the tax that targets income above $1 million, which was signed into law by Governor Bob Ferguson at the end of the 2026 legislative session.

Hallie Balch of LGW expressed optimism about the campaign’s momentum, stating, “There has been record-breaking support for repealing the income tax.” The number of signatures collected in the first week significantly surpasses the average for similar initiatives, indicating strong motivation among voters to challenge what they perceive as an unconstitutional tax.

The new tax law, set to take effect in 2028, imposes a 9.9% tax on income exceeding $1 million. Governor Ferguson has defended the tax as a reform of the state’s regressive tax code, highlighting its provisions for expanding tax credits for working families, providing relief for small businesses, and investing in education and affordable childcare.

Despite these assurances, LGW founder Brian Heywood remains skeptical, stating, “No one believes Olympia — they know this income tax is coming for them.” Heywood shared that the campaign’s goal is to collect 400,000 signatures to ensure the initiative qualifies for the November ballot, with a stretch goal of 700,000 to set a new state record.

Previously, LGW attempted to repeal the tax via referendum, but this effort was blocked by a “necessity clause” attached to the legislation, which precludes a public vote. Undeterred, LGW is now focused on the initiative process, which requires a higher number of signatures but offers a path to potentially overturn the tax through direct voter action.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

LGW has planned signing events across Washington state to maintain the campaign’s momentum. With a deadline of June 28 for signature collection, the organization is mobilizing volunteers and supporters to reach their ambitious targets.

The initiative’s success in gathering signatures reflects a broader sentiment among Washington residents who feel excluded from the legislative process and are eager to have their voices heard on this significant policy issue. As the campaign progresses, it will be crucial to watch how this grassroots effort influences the broader debate on taxation and economic policy in the state.
