The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge has implemented hiking restrictions due to extreme heat. Hiking is now only allowed from sunrise until 10 a.m.
Refuge officials posted on Facebook, ‘Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) is experiencing extreme heat with heat indices exceeding 100 degrees. Coupled with the rocky and rugged terrain of the Refuge, this extreme heat poses safety hazards for visitors as well as emergency response personnel who may be called upon for search and rescue operations.’
All hikers must be off the trails and the Mount Scott Roadway by 10 a.m. The refuge will then close to hiking until further notice. However, refuge roads will remain open to vehicles and bicycles for wildlife observation and photography.
