WHO says Congo Ebola outbreak could be contained within three months with sufficient resources

In a video briefing from Bunia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Dr. Thierno Balde, the World Health Organization’s incident manager for the Ebola response, told reporters that the agency remains hopeful the outbreak can be contained within a three‑month window. He emphasized that success depends on the availability of the necessary resources to support vaccination, treatment and contact‑tracing efforts.

Earlier this month, the WHO announced that a reversal of the virus’s spread was achievable within three months. Since that statement, the disease has moved into a sixth province, raising concerns among health officials about the speed of containment. Nevertheless, Dr. Balde said, “About the next plan for the three months, yes, if you have the necessary resources, I think it will be possible to do that.”

The outbreak, first identified in the North Kivu province, has claimed dozens of lives and prompted the deployment of international medical teams. The virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals, making rapid identification of cases and isolation critical. The WHO’s strategy focuses on expanding vaccination campaigns, strengthening laboratory capacity, and ensuring that treatment centers are equipped to manage severe cases.

Local health workers in Bunia and surrounding areas have been conducting door‑to‑door education campaigns to inform residents about symptoms and preventive measures. Community leaders are being engaged to address cultural practices that may hinder containment, such as traditional burial rites. The WHO has also called on the Congolese government to allocate additional funding for personal protective equipment and to support the logistics of moving supplies to remote regions.

International partners, including the United Nations and several non‑governmental organizations, have pledged assistance, but the scale of the response required remains significant. Dr. Balde warned that without a coordinated effort, the virus could continue to spread, potentially crossing borders into neighboring provinces and countries.

What families and faith communities can do

Families in affected areas are urged to monitor for fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and unexplained bleeding, and to seek medical care immediately if symptoms appear. Faith leaders are being asked to use their platforms to disseminate accurate health information and to discourage practices that could increase transmission.

The WHO will release regular updates on the outbreak’s status and will adjust its response plan as new data become available. The organization remains confident that, with adequate resources and community cooperation, the Ebola threat can be mitigated within the projected three‑month timeframe.
