France sanctions Israeli minister over West Bank settler violence

Paris – French Foreign Minister Jean‑Noël Barrot condemned recent violence in the West Bank, describing attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians as “utterly disgraceful” and “inhuman.” In a post on X, Barrot linked the incidents to France’s decision to sanction Israel’s far‑right police minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir.

Sanctions explained

In May, France announced a ban that prevents Ben‑Gvir from entering French territory. Barrot reiterated that the ban reflects the minister’s recent statements, which he called unacceptable. The French government said the sanctions are a direct response to the settler‑led attacks that have escalated in recent weeks.

Potential further actions

Barrot warned that additional sanctions could be applied to Israeli settlers deemed involved in the violence. He indicated that France is prepared to target individuals or groups that facilitate or carry out attacks against Palestinians in the occupied territories.

International coordination

France’s move follows a coordinated effort announced in June by Britain, Canada, France and Norway. The four nations agreed to impose sanctions on Israeli networks that finance, enable, or execute violence in the West Bank. The coordinated sanctions aim to pressure those responsible for the unrest and to signal a unified stance against settlement‑related aggression.

Israel’s response

Israel’s foreign ministry rejected the June measures, accusing the sanctioning governments of failing to control antisemitism and of inflaming it with their actions. The ministry argued that the sanctions target legitimate Israeli officials and do not address the root causes of the conflict.

Background on settlements

Hundreds of thousands of Israeli settlers live among millions of Palestinians in territories captured by Israel during the 1967 war. The international community, including most United Nations bodies, considers the settlements a violation of international law. Israel disputes this assessment, citing historical and biblical connections to the land.

Implications

The French sanctions add to a growing list of diplomatic actions aimed at curbing settlement expansion and settler violence. While the measures do not directly affect the daily lives of most Americans, they reflect broader international concerns about the stability of the region and the treatment of Palestinian civilians.

Barrot’s statements underscore France’s willingness to use diplomatic tools to address what it views as human‑rights violations. The upcoming weeks will reveal whether additional sanctions are imposed and how Israel’s government will respond to mounting international pressure.
