White House eyes Scott Jennings as early frontrunner for press secretary role

Washington, D.C. – Amid preparations for the upcoming midterm elections, White House officials are quietly evaluating candidates to succeed Karoline Leavitt as press secretary. Multiple sources close to the administration told CNN that former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell’s longtime adviser, Scott Jennings, has emerged as an early favorite.

Initial meetings and senior backing

Chief of Staff Susie Wiles met with Jennings at Mastro’s Steakhouse in Washington at the request of the White House, according to two sources familiar with the encounter. A senior White House official described Jennings as “competent and good on TV,” noting his experience in both the George W. Bush administration and as a senior adviser to Sen. McConnell.

Process remains open

While Jennings’ name has gained traction, officials emphasized that the search is far from concluded. One source said Wiles intends to interview several other potential candidates before making any decision. Another White House official cautioned that Wiles will take her time to find a “grown‑up” who understands the nuances of the job and can maintain professionalism as the administration’s public face.

President’s stance

Former President Donald Trump, who continues to influence staffing choices, has indicated he is not in a rush to fill the vacancy. Trump is reportedly considering whether to rely on a rotating cast of Cabinet officials for press briefings on an indefinite basis, a strategy previously reported by CNN.

Jennings’ response

When asked on “NewsNight” by CNN’s Abby Phillip if he was interviewing for the position, Jennings declined to comment, stating, “I don’t have any comment about that.” He did stress the importance of a press secretary who can convey the administration’s actions to the American people, calling the role “the conduit to transparency in front of the camera and also behind the scenes.”

Family considerations

One source noted that Jennings, a Kentucky resident with four school‑aged children, is not actively campaigning for the job. The same source suggested his family commitments could influence his decision if offered the role.

Other potential candidates

Alina Habba, a former Trump‑appointed acting U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, publicly announced she is not seeking the position. Meanwhile, speculation has arisen about other names, including the president’s executive assistant, following recent media attention surrounding Natalie Harp.

Leavitt’s departure

Karoline Leavitt, who has served as a trusted adviser to Trump and regularly participates in private briefings, announced she will leave the post at the end of the month to spend more time with her young family. White House officials described her as thoughtful, not impulsive, and highlighted concerns about finding a successor who can handle both the public and behind‑the‑scenes responsibilities that have defined Leavitt’s tenure.

Looking ahead

With the midterm elections less than three months away, the White House faces a critical staffing decision. While Jennings remains a prominent name, officials stress that the process will continue to be thorough, ensuring the next press secretary can effectively communicate the administration’s agenda while upholding the professionalism expected of the role.
