Where the West Comes Alive: A Night at Sheridan’s Historic WYO Theater Rival — The Elkhorn Bar & Steakhouse

There are golf courses, and then there are golf courses that make you pull over on the cart path just to stare at the mountains. Powder Horn Golf Club, tucked along the western edge of Sheridan just off Decker Road, is firmly in the second category — and once you’ve played a round here, you’ll understand why golfers from across the Mountain West put it on their annual pilgrimage list.

Powder Horn is a sprawling 27-hole championship facility set against the dramatic backdrop of the Bighorn Mountains. The course was designed with the natural terrain in mind, meaning you’re not playing through some manicured, cookie-cutter layout. You’re navigating rolling high-plains topography, natural water features, stands of cottonwood and willow, and the kind of wide-open sky that Wyoming does better than anywhere else on earth. On a clear morning — and Sheridan gets a lot of clear mornings — the Bighorns rise up to the west in a wall of blue and purple shadow that is genuinely distracting if you’re trying to line up a putt.

The three nine-hole loops (named Arrowhead, Powder, and Horn) can be combined into your preferred 18-hole configuration, which gives the course a flexible, welcoming feel whether you’re a serious low-handicapper chasing a score or a casual player just happy to be outside. The fairways are generous enough that you won’t lose a sleeve of balls, but the greens have enough character and subtle break to keep things interesting from the first hole to the last.

What sets Powder Horn apart from a purely logistical standpoint is how well-maintained the whole operation is. The greens roll true and fast, the bunkers are raked consistently, and the cart paths are in good shape — details that matter more than people admit when you’re paying greens fees. Speaking of which, the rates here are reasonable by any standard, and genuinely impressive when you consider what you’re getting: a world-class mountain setting, a course in excellent condition, and an uncrowded experience that feels nothing like fighting for a tee time at a resort course.

The clubhouse is comfortable without being pretentious — cold drinks, a solid snack selection, and staff who actually seem to enjoy being there. You can rent clubs if you’re passing through without your bag, and the pro shop carries a well-curated selection of gear and apparel for anything you might have forgotten.

Early morning tee times in summer are particularly magical. The light hits the Bighorns at a low angle, the air is still cool, and the course is quiet enough that you can hear meadowlarks between shots. If you’re visiting Sheridan between May and October and you play golf at all, Powder Horn isn’t optional — it’s essential. Block out a full morning, bring sunscreen, and don’t forget to look up from your scorecard every now and then. The mountains aren’t going anywhere, but you might forget to appreciate them if you don’t make a point of it.

Powder Horn Golf Club is located at 1151 W. Bird Farm Road in Sheridan. Call ahead for tee times, especially on summer weekends, and check their website for seasonal rates and any tournament closures. It’s the kind of place that earns a return visit before you’ve even finished the back nine.
