Where the Mississippi Meets the Midwest: A Day at the Ely Recreational Trail and Cedar River Water Trail

There are mornings in Cedar Rapids when the fog sits low on the Cedar River, the water goes mirror-still, and the city feels like it belongs entirely to whoever is lucky enough to be out on the water. That is exactly the kind of morning that will ruin you — in the best possible way — for ordinary weekends. The Cedar River Water Trail makes those mornings available to almost anyone willing to show up with a paddle and a sense of curiosity.

Stretching roughly 57 miles through Linn County, the Cedar River Water Trail is one of Iowa’s most accessible and genuinely rewarding paddling corridors. It runs right through the heart of Cedar Rapids, meaning you do not have to drive two hours to find a proper outdoor adventure. You can launch from Ellis Harbor, tucked conveniently off Ellis Boulevard on the northwest side of the city, and be gliding past wooded bluffs and limestone outcroppings within minutes of leaving your car.

What makes this trail special is the remarkable variety it packs into a single river system. Upstream stretches near Palisades-Kepler State Park offer a wilder, rockier feel — great for experienced paddlers who want a little more challenge and drama in their scenery. The urban sections through Cedar Rapids proper, meanwhile, give you something genuinely unexpected: a peaceful, natural corridor winding through a midsize American city, with herons picking their way along the banks and the occasional osprey circling overhead while downtown’s skyline sits quietly in the background. It is the kind of contrast that reminds you how well nature and city can coexist when a community makes the effort.

Kayaks and canoes can be rented from local outfitters in the area, so you do not need to own equipment to get out there. Multiple access points — including launches at Otis Road, Czech Village, and Stewart Park — mean you can plan a trip of almost any length, from a leisurely two-hour float to a full-day expedition with a shuttle at the far end. The trail is well-marked and the current is generally gentle enough for beginners during normal water levels, though it is always worth checking conditions before you launch.

Bring a dry bag for your phone, pack a simple lunch, and plan to stop on a gravel bar somewhere in the middle. Eat your sandwich, watch the river move, listen to the red-winged blackbirds argue in the cattails. You will understand very quickly why people who discover this trail tend to come back season after season.

Fall is arguably the finest time to paddle here, when the cottonwoods and maples along the banks turn gold and copper and the crowds thin out considerably. Spring brings higher water and migrating waterfowl. Summer evenings offer long light and warm temperatures that make a sunset paddle feel like a small luxury. There is genuinely no bad season on the Cedar River — just different versions of beautiful.

Cedar Rapids does not always get credit as an outdoor destination, and that is a shame. The Cedar River Water Trail is proof that you do not need mountains or coastlines to find real, restorative time in nature. You just need a river, a paddle, and the willingness to slow down long enough to notice what has been flowing through this city all along.
