Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced an investigation into StubHub over issues with World Cup ticket purchases. Many fans who bought tickets on the platform did not receive them or received tickets that were significantly different from what they paid for.
Ghost Ticketing Allegations
Paxton claims that consumer complaints point to a pattern of “ghost ticketing,” where sellers list tickets they do not actually possess, collect payment, and then cancel when they cannot deliver. “In many cases, attending a World Cup match is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If StubHub is ghost ticketing Texans out of that experience, my office will use every tool available to hold them accountable and help fans who have been wronged,” said Paxton.
Texans who purchased World Cup tickets through StubHub and did not receive them, or received tickets significantly inferior to what they paid for, are encouraged to file a complaint with the Office of the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division.
A California viewer, Edgar Correa, shared his experience with a similar ordeal. Correa’s wife bought him World Cup tickets through StubHub, but they never received them. Despite the setback, Correa was able to find alternative tickets through FIFA’s official website.
StubHub Response
StubHub has blamed the cancellations on “transfer problems” tied to FIFA’s ticketing platform. However, a FIFA spokesperson stated that the official FIFA ticketing platform operates reliably and at scale, with over 4.6 million spectators attending matches to date.
FIFA rejects any suggestion that the functional problems experienced by users of third-party platforms are the result of FIFA’s ticketing infrastructure. Instead, FIFA recommends buying tickets only through their official site to avoid such issues.
