There is a particular kind of joy that comes from discovering a green, sprawling stretch of Irving that most people drive right past without a second glance. La Villita Park, tucked along the banks of the West Fork of the Trinity River near the SH-183 corridor on the city’s south side, is exactly that kind of discovery. And once you find it, you will wonder how it stayed off your radar for so long.
I stumbled onto La Villita on a crisp Saturday morning, lured by a tip from a local who swore the disc golf course here was some of the finest casual-outdoor fun in the entire Metroplex. He was not wrong. The course winds through mature oak and cedar elm trees, across gentle elevation changes that feel almost surprising for North Texas, and along stretches where the river comes into full, gorgeous view. Whether you are a seasoned disc golfer who knows your overstable midrange from your understable driver, or someone who has never thrown a disc in your life, the layout welcomes you warmly.
The course itself is an 18-hole design that rewards thoughtful play rather than brute power. Several holes require you to thread the disc through a corridor of trees, and at least two or three will have you standing on a tee pad with a genuine grin on your face, simply because the scenery is that good. Bring a beginner and watch them fall in love with the sport within the first three holes. Bring an experienced player and watch them quietly obsess over the technical lines. The course handles both audiences with ease.
Beyond the disc golf, La Villita Park offers well-maintained picnic areas, open lawn space ideal for a lazy afternoon with a book or a blanket, and paved walking paths that connect to the broader Trinity Trails system. Families arrive early on weekends to claim the shaded pavilions, and the park has a genuine neighborhood feel that you do not always find in larger, more developed green spaces. Dogs are welcome on leash, and you will see plenty of them trotting happily alongside their owners on the trail connectors.
Parking is free and accessible directly off West Shady Grove Road. The disc golf course is free to play, which makes it one of the most satisfying no-cost afternoons you can spend in Irving. Discs can be purchased at several sporting goods retailers nearby if you need to gear up before your first round.
La Villita Park is the kind of place that becomes a standing weekend tradition. You show up once out of curiosity, and before you know it you are texting friends on Thursday evening asking who wants to play a round on Saturday. That quiet pull is the real measure of a great local find, and La Villita has it in abundance.
