There are restaurants you visit, and then there are restaurants you remember for years afterward — the kind where the meal lingers in your mind long after the check has been paid. Chez Fonfon, tucked into the leafy Five Points South neighborhood of Birmingham, is absolutely the latter. From the moment you step through the door, you understand that something genuinely special is happening here.
Chez Fonfon opened in 2000 under the guidance of acclaimed Birmingham chef Frank Stitt, the same visionary behind the celebrated Highlands Bar and Grill just next door. But Fonfon — a childhood nickname for Frank — has always had its own distinct personality. Where Highlands leans toward the grand and ceremonial, Fonfon is warm, relaxed, and infectiously welcoming. Think zinc bar top, mosaic tile floors, bentwood chairs, and the low hum of good conversation bouncing off walls decorated with vintage French posters. It feels like Paris transplanted to Alabama, and somehow that combination makes perfect sense.
The menu is classic French bistro, executed with the kind of quiet confidence that only comes from decades of doing something right. The steak frites is a must-order — a beautifully seared bavette steak alongside a pile of crisp, golden frites that you will absolutely finish even when you swear you are full. The moules marinières arrive in a wide bowl, the mussels plump and briny, swimming in a fragrant broth of white wine, shallots, and herbs that practically demands you order extra bread for soaking. And that bread, by the way, is worth a separate conversation entirely.
The burger at Fonfon has developed something of a cult following in Birmingham, and rightfully so. Ground in-house, served on a housemade bun with aioli and a handful of perfectly dressed greens, it manages to be both humble and extraordinary at the same time. Pair it with a glass of something from their thoughtfully curated wine list and you have an afternoon well spent.
Service at Fonfon strikes that ideal balance between attentive and unhurried. The staff know the menu deeply and genuinely enjoy talking about it, which makes the whole experience feel less like dining out and more like being welcomed into someone’s home. The clientele is a pleasing mix of neighborhood regulars, date-night couples, and out-of-towners who clearly did their homework before arriving in Birmingham.
Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends, though the bar area often has room for walk-ins and is a perfectly fine place to spend an evening. Chez Fonfon is located at 2007 11th Avenue South, right in the heart of Five Points South, within easy walking distance of boutiques, galleries, and the gorgeous Highland Avenue streetscape.
Birmingham has no shortage of places to eat well, but Chez Fonfon occupies a category all its own. It is the kind of place that reminds you why great restaurants matter — not just for the food, but for how they make you feel while you are sitting inside them. Go soon, and go hungry.
