When Faith Meets Mental Health: Pastors Louie and Shelly Giglio Open Up About Anxiety, Loss, and the Birth of Passion

By OBBM Network Editorial Staff

Derived from an episode of Live Free with Josh Howerton.

On a flight, he imagined a field filled with college students kneeling in prayer. That vision, born from a moment of personal turmoil, would later become the seed of the Passion conferences that have drawn millions.

From Brokenness to a Public Testimony

Giglio described a night that still haunts him: his father’s brain swelling, a neurosurgeon demanding a signature for emergency surgery, and the eventual death of his dad from a heart attack. “I was frustrated, so cloudy,” he said, recalling how the loss left him questioning his own purpose. The grief was compounded by his own battle with anxiety, a struggle he likened not to a simple panic attack but to “cracking” under pressure. “I didn’t think I was ever going to be normal again,” he confessed.

Instead of retreating, Giglio turned to worship. He recalled a college roommate handing him a CD titled John Piper Passion One Day, which sparked a chain reaction. The song “Don’t Waste Your Life” became his anthem, and he and his friends formed a “war room” to replay it on a boom box for four years. “There’s no way I’m doing what I’m doing today without that,” he told host Josh Howerton.

The Birth of Passion

In 1995, while serving as campus ministers in Texas, Louie and Shelly moved to Atlanta to care for Louie’s disabled father. The trip was abruptly halted when his father died, leaving the couple without a job, a ministry, or a clear direction. Yet, a few months later, Louie found himself on a plane to Dallas for a youth event at Reunion Arena. During that flight, the same vision of a massive prayer field resurfaced.

When they finally gathered 40,000 students in Memphis, it was not a concert but a solemn, prayer‑filled field. “People camped out in tents, and no one could walk on the field for three days except for a wooden tower where scripture was read 24 hours a day,” Giglio explained. The event was modeled after Nehemiah and Ezra, focusing on continuous Scripture reading and worship rather than spectacle.

Honest Talk on Anxiety and Depression

The conversation with Howerton also delved into the often‑unspoken mental health struggles of ministry leaders. Giglio admitted, “I cracked. I didn’t think I was ever going to be normal again,” and added that praising God is not about waiting for miracles but recognizing His identity as a healer. He said, “I said, you didn’t heal me yesterday and you didn’t heal me today. I don’t know if you’re going to heal me tomorrow, but I do know you’re a healer. So I’m going to praise you not because you healed me. I want to praise you because you’re a healer.”

By sharing this vulnerability, the Giglios aim to normalize discussions of anxiety and depression within the church, encouraging others to seek help and to find solace in honest prayer.

The Ongoing Impact of the Giglio Ministry

Today, the Passion movement continues to host large‑scale conferences, worship albums, and a global online presence. The Giglios credit their early influences—John Piper’s book Desiring God and the sermon “Don’t Waste Your Life”—as foundational to their theological outlook. They also acknowledge the support of their community, noting how the “Live Free” platform has amplified their message.

Beyond conferences, the Giglios have invested in local church planting, discipleship programs, and mental‑health resources for pastors. Their transparency about personal struggles has inspired many churches to create safe spaces for discussing anxiety, depression, and grief.

Why This Story Matters

The Giglios’ journey illustrates how personal pain can be redirected into public ministry that touches millions. Their willingness to speak openly about mental health challenges breaks a long‑standing taboo in evangelical circles, offering a model for leaders who feel isolated by their own struggles. As the conversation on faith and mental wellness continues to grow, the Giglios’ testimony serves as both a cautionary tale and a beacon of hope.

In a culture that often expects pastors to appear flawless, Louie and Shelly Giglio remind listeners that authentic faith includes moments of doubt, brokenness, and the relentless pursuit of God’s healing. Their story encourages believers to embrace vulnerability as a pathway to deeper community and lasting impact.
