When a Child’s Mind Becomes a Crime Scene: Unpacking Psychological Abuse in Family Courts

By OBBM Network Editorial Staff

Derived from an episode of Slam The Gavel.

What does it look like when a child’s developing mind is treated like a crime scene? Dawn McCarty, a criminologist and survivor of severe psychological abuse, says the answer is a shattered sense of self that can persist into adulthood.

The “Identity Heist” and the Birth of a New Lens

McCarty describes her own childhood abduction at age four as the initial breach in what she calls an “identity heist.” After being reunited with her biological father, a 44‑year campaign of denigration continued, rewriting her narrative and replacing genuine memories with fabricated ones. She explains, “I call this the narrative rewrite,” noting that the process left her questioning which recollections were true.

Applying her background in cybersecurity and forensic investigation, McCarty developed a visual model she names the “Crime Scene Brain Print.” “It looks like a fingerprint if you look at it… shaped as a brain,” she says, illustrating how the first breach can be traced and how evidence can be uncovered to restore personal sovereignty.

Why Courts Miss the Crime Scene

According to McCarty, judges and child‑welfare professionals often lack the language to identify psychological abuse. She notes that parental alienation is rarely listed in the DSM‑5, leaving many practitioners unaware of its dynamics. This gap, she argues, allows covert tactics— such as narrative control and attachment manipulation— to go unchecked in family‑court proceedings.

She stresses the importance of giving survivors a vocabulary: “The book will help them get to the point where they have the language. They understand that they were abused because I didn’t understand that to the level of the abuse that I actually endured.” By equipping families with precise terms, the hope is to shift court discussions from vague impressions to concrete evidence.

A Practical Roadmap for Survivors and Professionals

McCarty’s upcoming book series, *Unsealing the Crime Scene*, offers a step‑by‑step guide. It encourages survivors to document their experiences, create a “case file,” and prepare a concise handoff for therapists or court-appointed experts. She explains that this preparation can dramatically shorten the time needed for professionals to grasp the scope of abuse: “When you go in and see the therapist, you can show the therapist this information, they can read it. Now they have an understanding immediately. They don’t have to wait for weeks or months of therapy to try and get it out of you.”

The framework also outlines levels of severity— mild, medium, severe— allowing adults to tailor their healing journey. McCarty cautions that without a clear understanding of one’s own memories, “Your memory is something that is yours alone. They can try to change it, and that’s unethical.”

Long‑Term Implications for Families and Society

Beyond individual healing, McCarty warns that unaddressed childhood psychological abuse can ripple into future relationships, potentially affecting spouses and children of survivors. She remarks, “Now they’re adults, and it’s going to affect their future families and their future relationships with spouses. I don’t want to say we’ll go down the toilet, but they have more potential to do that.”

By framing a child’s mind as a crime scene, McCarty aims to bring hidden trauma into the public eye, urging courts, educators, and mental‑health providers to adopt forensic‑style assessments. Her hope is that a systematic approach will prevent the “shelf” of unaddressed harm from collapsing under its weight.

Maryann Petri’s Role in Amplifying the Conversation

Host Maryann Petri, a longtime advocate for dismantling family‑court corruption, welcomes McCarty back to the *Slam The Gavel* series to deepen the discussion on psychological abuse. Petri’s platform, dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.com, provides resources for families navigating the complex legal landscape, reinforcing the need for clear, actionable guidance.

The conversation underscores a growing demand for specialized training among judges, social workers, and therapists to recognize the subtle yet devastating tactics of covert abuse. As more survivors like McCarty share their stories, the legal system may be compelled to treat psychological harm with the same rigor applied to physical crimes.

In a climate where family courts often operate behind closed doors, shining a forensic light on a child’s psyche could be the breakthrough needed to protect vulnerable children and hold abusers accountable.
