What Should I Actually Eat at the Salt City Market?

What do you do on a Friday night in Syracuse when you want something genuinely good but don’t want to deal with a reservation, a parking garage, or a bill that makes you wince? That’s the question I kept asking myself before a friend finally dragged me to Ale ‘N Angus Pub on Erie Boulevard East, and honestly, I’ve been kicking myself for waiting so long.

Ale ‘N Angus sits in a stretch of Erie Boulevard that doesn’t get much fanfare — it’s a working-class corridor, not a destination strip — and the pub itself looks the part. The exterior is unpretentious to the point of being easy to miss. Inside, it’s dark wood, a well-worn bar, some booths, and a crowd that’s clearly been coming here long enough to have a regular order. That alone tells you something.

The menu is a straightforward pub lineup — burgers, wings, sandwiches, some pasta — but the execution is what sets it apart. The burgers are thick, hand-formed, and cooked to temperature without argument. I usually get the bacon mushroom Swiss, which arrives on a toasted bun with enough going on that you don’t need to fuss with condiments. The fries are cut in-house, a little uneven, which is exactly how I like them.

If you go once, order the wings. They come out crispy without being brittle, and the sauce options range from sensible (honey BBQ, buffalo) to the kind of heat levels that require a signed waiver from your digestive system. I stick to the medium buffalo, which has actual flavor behind the burn. The portions are generous — a dozen wings runs around $14-16 depending on market pricing, and it’s enough for two people if you’ve got other food coming.

The bar side is worth noting. They rotate a solid selection of local and regional drafts, and the bartenders know what’s on. I’ve had good conversations at that bar about everything from Syracuse basketball to the relative merits of various wing sauces. It’s that kind of place. Nobody’s performing hospitality at you; they’re just doing their jobs well.

Prices across the board are reasonable by any measure — most entrees fall between $10 and $18, and you can get out of there full and happy for under $25 a person including a drink or two. Happy hour runs weekday afternoons and shaves a couple of dollars off pints, which makes the bar side especially appealing if you get there before six.

Parking is a non-issue, which I mention because it genuinely factors into where I’m willing to go on a busy night. There’s a lot right there, and Erie Boulevard doesn’t get gridlocked the way downtown does.

The crowd skews local and regular — I’ve never felt like an outsider, but I’ve also never felt like I was in a scene. It’s just people eating good food and having a drink, which is a harder thing to find than it should be in any city. If you’ve been sleeping on Ale ‘N Angus the way I was, go on a Thursday or Friday evening when the kitchen is humming and the bar has some energy. You’ll understand why the regulars keep coming back.
