What Makes Forest Ridge Worth Lacing Up For?

So you’ve got a free Saturday morning and someone tells you to try the trails out near Forest Ridge. What does that actually mean? Is it a quick loop around a pond, or something you need to plan for? The answer is somewhere in between — and that’s exactly what makes it worth going.

Haikey Creek Trail runs through one of the quieter green spaces on Broken Arrow’s eastern edge, threading along the creek bottom before climbing into open grassland and back through a mix of post oak and blackjack. The main trail system is roughly four to five miles depending on which connectors you take, with enough variation in the terrain to hold your attention without punishing your knees. The creek crossings can get muddy after rain, so check the weather before you go, and wear shoes you don’t mind getting dirty.

The trailhead off Forest Ridge Drive has a small gravel lot — not huge, so early mornings are smarter than mid-afternoon on weekends. You’ll find restroom facilities nearby, though nothing elaborate. Bring your own water; there’s no fountain along the route. Admission is free, which matters if you’re trying to find places to exercise regularly without it costing anything.

What actually sets this trail apart from the paved greenway paths scattered across the city is the feel of it. You move through real creek bottom, not a manicured park. In spring, the redbud and dogwood put on a legitimate show along the lower sections. In fall, the trail through the hardwoods turns properly golden for about three good weeks. Birders do well here — the riparian corridor draws species you won’t spot in the median of Elm Road. If you bring a dog, they’ll be ecstatic; this is the kind of place where the smell alone sends them sideways.

Trail users share the space — hikers, trail runners, and the occasional mountain biker — so pay attention, especially on the blind curves near the creek bends. Foot traffic is light enough on weekday mornings that you can go a full hour without seeing more than a handful of people. That alone is worth something in a metro area where the more famous greenways feel like sidewalks during commute hours.

If you’re running, a standard out-and-back on the main stem gives you a solid five miles with enough root systems and grade changes to feel like actual training rather than just logging distance. If you’re walking, budget an easy ninety minutes and stop at the second creek crossing — it’s the most photogenic spot on the whole route, especially in low morning light.

There’s no fee, no app required, nothing to book. You just show up, park, and start walking. For a city that keeps building new amenities, it’s refreshing to find something that asks nothing of you except to show up and pay attention to what’s already there.
