For one writer, their grandparents’ house was a place of wonder and discipline, where they learned to respect the furniture, finish their food, and address adults properly.
Respecting Tradition
These grandparents, having grown up during the Dust Bowl, instilled in their grandchildren the importance of respecting their belongings and being mindful of their actions. From not sitting on the armrests to not entering the kitchen while cooking was underway, these rules may have seemed strict but were rooted in a desire to teach their grandchildren about responsibility and self-control.
Looking presentable for church was also a priority, with grandchildren expected to dress modestly and behave respectfully. These values, passed down through generations, continue to shape the community in West Texas, where traditional family values and a strong Christian faith are still highly regarded.
