West Salem Senior Overcomes Challenges to Graduate for His Family’s Future

Elvis Muthee, a graduating senior from West Salem High School, has become an inspiring figure for his community by overcoming significant personal challenges to earn his high school diploma. Known for his unwavering support for his family, Muthee has been a protective brother, a steadfast son, and now, a devoted father to his newborn son, Zaire.

Muthee’s journey to graduation was not an easy one. His responsibilities at home often took precedence over his education, leading to chronic absenteeism and even missing his entire junior year. However, with the encouragement of his school counselor, Linda Munguia, Muthee found the motivation to focus on his studies and make a plan to graduate on time.

Muthee’s determination was sparked by the birth of his son, Zaire. He realized the importance of setting a strong example for his child, which fueled his commitment to his education. “I made up my mind. I was like, OK. This is what I have to do,” Muthee said, reflecting on his decision to prioritize school.

Born in Kenya and having moved to the United States at a young age, Muthee’s early life was marked by challenges. Living in Boston, he witnessed the dangers of street violence and the recruitment of young children into gangs, which deeply affected him. These experiences forced him to mature quickly, as he sought to protect his younger brothers from similar fates.

Despite the adversities he faced, including losing friends to violence, Muthee remained determined to change his life. His family’s move to Oregon provided a new beginning, and the calmer environment of Salem was a stark contrast to his previous experiences. This change allowed him to focus on his education and future.

Muthee plans to move to Texas with his partner Aylena and their son, where he aims to pursue a career in business and law. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of family support in overcoming life’s obstacles.

Muthee’s message to others facing similar challenges is one of resilience: “My message to honestly everybody, it’s just ‘get up, stand up. You have to fight. When you think you’re done, you’re not.'”
